Around 2000 theatrical employees participated in their recent study, “Power and structure in the Theater”. 55 percent of the reports because of power 62 percent of abuse, at the purely artistic staff at all. Why is it so virulent?
I was amazed. I wrote two books on the System the theatre, because I know his need for reform from the inside. My work has sensitized me a lot for questions of abuse of power. Nevertheless, I would not have expected such Numbers.
How do you explain it?
With the outdated Director model: A sole artist can be a Prince but not a leadership concept for a modern operation! The ease with which the Power can be boundless, stretching, is too great a temptation, and it can develop no fear-free working atmosphere. Even in the case of Directors without the power of the majority of abuse is the role of the ruler is simply asking too much.
Why?
Because of a not alone, don’t Know so much, to all of the Theatre area is covered, and often in its bubble lives. Instead of openness to young, female and diverse forces, the blindness of the directed by leading Directors leads to the promotion of the same artist. I recommend, therefore, expressly team for the management of theatres. It takes, depending on operation size, a minimum of 3 to a maximum of 7 people. I also think a lot of Management training with a focus on leadership as a prerequisite for a management office; and psychological Assessments in advance.
“We need a women’s quota!”Thomas Schmidt, a Professor of theater management.
Psycho-Assessment for theatre Director?
That would be very useful. Often the humility to see himself as the first servant of the theatre is missing. In 2005, I had an Assessment at the time of application for the post of Commercial Director of the Schauspielhaus Zurich. I found this totally makes sense. Because then the Professor came, I refused the job. But the principle is correct. What I am now convinced: We need a female quota!
Even some of the women reject.
And women in finding commissions often choose white men. We have a clear deficit with the authors, Directors, conductors, in-finding commissions: Only one rate change since. Also, the vast majority of sexual Assaults – of which almost 10 per cent of theatre staff reports – is perpetrated by men, often Directors and Directors,. Not infrequently, Deals be offered: for example a role, or fees increase against Sex. Independent Ombudsman services are sorely needed.
In Switzerland, has now been widely used, a new code of conduct.
This is good. The code of me is missing, however, is the commitment of all Senior, to follow an ethical work model, even if this touches on artistic questions. Also, the exclusion of nepotism and favouritism lack of close people. In Bern, the theatre was damaged by such behavior over the years. Learned there still nothing, it’s a white man has been restored as a single head selected.
“also in Switzerland a burning structure problem.”Thomas Schmidt
Are your findings on the Switzerland transferable?
I studied in Germany, but got Feedback from Switzerland, especially since I have advised a variety of platforms and currently the Mentor of the three designated Gessnerallee-chief am. So I can say: The problem of the abuse of power is not pronounced in Switzerland, as the artists are financially better placed and less delivered; but Attacks and pressure there anyway.
What haperts?
The Director of model is absurd, one has in Switzerland a burning structure problem. It all is manageable, but just because the scene is so small, keep the victim often prefers the mouth. The old employer’s duty of care is not enough by far. In addition to the basic needs of individuals to participation, gender parity and state the grounds of decisions today.
In fact, there are also in Switzerland and abuse, and the Young Actresses are particularly vulnerable. A victim comes to word , read here.
