Novak Djokovic continues his road to a 24th Grand Slam title: the Serb quietly eliminated the Croatian Borna Gojo (105th and from qualifying) 6-2, 7-5, 6-4, Sunday in the round of 16.
In the quarters, the world No.2 – already guaranteed to become No.1 again at the end of the tournament – will face the American Taylor Fritz (9th).
Djokovic will thus play his thirteenth quarter-final at Flushing Meadows on Tuesday, like Andre Agassi and Roger Federer, only Ivan Lendl having done better (17).
In sixteen appearances so far, Djokovic has won the title three times so far, the last in 2018.
After a complicated third round against his compatriot Laslo Djere to whom he had given up the first two sets, Djokovic did not have to work too hard in the 8th. He only gave up his face-off once and didn’t have to defend another break point.
On the contrary, he got thirteen and converted five, before concluding with an ace, the twelfth of the match.
“We had never faced each other on the main circuit, but I watched his games in qualifying and this week and I could see he was physical and hitting hard. I had to neutralize his serve, ”analyzed Djokovic.
