The women’s 4×400 m relay from the Netherlands, carried by its star Femke Bol who signed a cannon return, won the gold medal at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest on Sunday.
Bol, who had fallen heavily in the final of the mixed 4x400m relay on the first day of the Worlds, offered the title to his country thanks to a superb last lap, allowing his team to win in 3 min 20 sec 72, ahead of Jamaica (3:20.88) and the British (3:21.04).
The Dutchwoman, crowned world champion in the 400m hurdles on Thursday, took the baton in third position and caught up with her competitors at the cost of an impressive final stretch, to steal first place from the Jamaicans just before the finish line, for the last event of these World Championships.
Bol, 23, could have pocketed an extra gold medal at these Worlds if she had not fallen a few meters from the line as she battled for victory in the mixed 4x400m.
The United States, titled in 2022 at home in Eugene (Oregon), had been disqualified in the playoffs on Saturday for a handover outside the zone.
