Frenchman Gaël Monfils lost Monday in the first round of the ATP 250 tournament in Atlanta against Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis, who won 1-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7/5). Current 322nd in the ATP ranking, Monfils, 36, had an invitation from the organizers.
After winning the first set easily, he was dominated in the second before losing in the tie-break in the third set. The Frenchman has only won one victory this season on the circuit, in the first round of Roland-Garros, against the Argentinian Sebastian Baez in five sets. In the next round Kokkinakis, 86th in the world, will face his compatriot Alex De Minaur, seeded N.2.
