World No.1 Carlos Alcaraz, titled at Wimbledon last weekend after his victory against Novak Djokovic, overthrew Belgian David Goffin (111th) 4-6, 6-4, 10-8 on Friday at the Hopman Cup in Nice. Five days after winning his second Grand Slam in five sets, the 20-year-old Spaniard found himself trailing 6-4, 3-1, and had to work hard to overcome Goffin in the super-tie break, where he was trailing 4-0.
With this victory, Spain returns to equality with Belgium after the defeat of Rebeka Masarova against Élise Mertens 7-6 (7/3), 2-6, 10-5, before the decisive double disputed in the evening.
The Hopman Cup is a mixed competition where the six participating nations, made up of a man and a woman, are divided into two pools of three. Each country meets the other two teams from its group in the following format: a ladies’ singles, a men’s singles and then a mixed doubles. The winners of each group compete in the final. Spain will face Donna Vekic and Borna Coric’s Croatia on Saturday.
