Women’s Asvel announced on Wednesday that it had made a report to the delegate of the Euroleague match which opposed it the day before to the Romanians of Sfantu Gheorghe concerning the behavior of the opposing coach towards French international Gabby Williams. The accusations aimed at the coach of the Romanian club have not been specified at this stage of the case. “At the end of the meeting this Tuesday evening at the Astroballe, LDLC ASVEL Féminin made a report to the match delegate concerning the behavior of the opposing coach towards Gabby Williams,” announced the Lyon club -Villeurbanne. “Our club now has full confidence in FIBA (the International Federation, Editor’s note) which has taken up this matter,” adds Asvel.
On her Twitter account, Williams (27 years old, 35 selections) responded late Tuesday evening to a user asking her if she had deleted a previous message: “FIBA is investigating so I’ll let them handle it. Apparently he has been a problem all season,” Williams wrote without further details.
The International Basketball Federation, organizer of the Women’s Euroleague, confirmed that an investigation was underway but that it could not say more. “FIBA is aware of an incident during a match to which you allude and is currently conducting an in-depth investigation into this subject,” a communications manager for the federation responded to AFP. “We cannot make any further statement at this stage but we want to assure you that we are taking the situation very seriously,” he added. Asvel, who were playing at home, beat Sfantu Gheorghe (94-77) on Tuesday in a no-holds-barred match in the 14th and final day of the Euroleague.
