Garrucha City Council awarded the roundabout works to the intersection of the A370 road (known as Camino De las Palmeras) and the old Vera Road. This intersection is known for its significant concentration in accidents and will require an investment of around 400,000 euros. “With normalcy restored it is time for us to start executing some of the works we have been awaiting. Although it might not be the most convenient time, and may create traffic problems, we must release all infrastructures that will allow us to grow in an orderly manner and provide security for those who are not visiting, especially if we wish to keep that status commercial and hospitality nerve centre in Levante Almeria,” Maria Lopez Cervantes, the mayor, stated.

A ‘four-legged roundabout’ is being designed to increase vehicle safety and accessibility. The Road Knots Guide published by Ministry of Public Works is the basis for the design of this roundabout.

When projecting the work, it was considered that there is high traffic flow in both directions at the intersection. The direct connection between Camino de las Palmeras (old Camino de Vera) and Camino de las Palmeras is also not permitted due to the continuous line along the A-370 axis. There is however a risk of vehicles crossing each other’s roads.

The Camino de las Palmeras is connected to the only Secondary Education Institute of Garrucha. This increases traffic volume at peak hours, and creates a need for increased road safety. We knew that we had to act immediately on this issue, and on other issues that we will slowly undertake. However, we must be mindful that the works will cause inconvenience. The company that will perform the works has extensive experience in public works and will know how to balance the work with the substantial increase in population and visits we receive each year. This season will also exceed all predictions. Lopez Cervantes says that we are prepared for this.

The interior width of the roundabout will be 37 meters. Both the exit and entry lanes will be slightly wider than they were previously. This will allow for better maneuverability and safer driving. It will reach the entrance line of a ring road and traffic flow will be assured.

Eight nine-meter high lampposts made from galvanized steel with 136W Led luminaires were placed to light the roundabout.
