Tabea Zimmermann was a great choice to be the Festival’s resident artists. She has been the main protagonist of two concerts that reached new heights in just two nights. Last night, the Royal Hospital’s Patio de los Marmoles was filled with excitement at the prospect of her live action. Meeting again with Javier Perianes (Huelva-born musician), at the height of his career. He once again provided a good example last night of his exceptional quality in a program that ran from the romantic to the popular.
It was a spectacular start, with the ‘Fantasiestucke’, op. Schumann’s 73′. They played the first movement delicately, and the fast finale ‘with flame’. The wonder continued with the Op. Johannes Brahms. His two ‘allegros’ are among the most beautiful pages in romantic music. Both performed their pieces with undoubted mastery – as required, in strict black. It’s a joy to see Zimmermann’s ability to be one with his instrument and how he moves with his head. She is a show with an orchestra, but she is a god in chamber music. They both got a round of applause before the break.
The Spanish part arrived after the Central European portion of the concert. After Guinjoan’s solo with Perianes, MauricioSotelo performed the buleria of viola from Muros de Dolor’. This piece enters the ears almost like a drill and pushes the feet. The performer at the fingerboard is masterful and gives life to the bow. More enthusiasm, more brave. The two of them reunite for the final section, where they cover Falla’s ‘Siete canciones’. They end the show with Piazzolla’s ‘Le grand tango’. The two of them were the big winners last night.
