photography is The Medium of photography is that you have to say for now, just so, in the Instagram age, already a little disenchanted. Well, there are guys like Thomas Ruff.
The 61-Year-old from the black forest, learned his craft in the early ‘ 80s at the legendary Bechers in Düsseldorf, may it be profession always back to old, half-forgotten techniques, elements and crosses, this time nonchalantly with state of the art digital methods.
For his latest prank, he went to the archives of the Victoria&Albert Museum in London, from where he is old, sometimes moldy paper negative of a certain Captain Linnaeus Tripe took (with the blessing of the Museum people, of course).
This Tripe was made around 1860 in the order of the British government photographs in Burma and Madras, with a then-novel, special travel photo technique: Instead of heavy glass plates, the light was placed-sensitive coated paper in the camera, which made the whole story, of course, easier.
Ruff now reproduced Tripes Negative, made a Positive out of it, put the images on top of each other, and achieved very picturesque, almost fairy-tale effects. So To Speak: Slow Photography!
