Very little of the american pianist Bruce Hornsbys big production sounds like ”The way it is”, the only surviving åttiotalshit he is associated with. Through the years he has slightly aesthetically wobbly tested the most, but now landed in a collaboration with Justin Vernon, drummer Jack DeJohnette and the chamber orchestra yMusic.
He does not make it easy for either himself or the audience, but it has become a series of interesting, demanding, sometimes beautiful songs in the borderland between pop, minimalist jazz, and a very american broadwaymusik. It is easy to think that the hit actually hurt him artistically, to the created completely false expectations. For this album requires a completely different audience, one that takes its time, and estimates the angular rhythms, the awkward harmonies and the big gestures.
