Botswana’s Nijel Amos, 2012 Olympic runner-up in the 800m, has been suspended for three years for doping with a metabolic modulator, the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) announced on Wednesday.
Amos (29) tested positive on June 4, 2022 for “GW1516 metabolites” during an out-of-competition test, and was provisionally suspended in July, just before the World Championships in Eugene (United States).
He is deprived of competition until July 2025 and will therefore miss the Paris Olympics in 2024, where he could claim a fourth participation in the event.
Amos is the third all-time performer on the double lap. He had run in 1 min 41 sec 73 in 2012 at the London Olympics where he won silver behind Kenyan world record holder David Rudisha.
