Sampaoli is committed to the team of the carioca club “until December 31, 2024”, indicated Flamengo on his Twitter account. Sacked on March 21 by Sevilla FC just five months after his arrival, Sampaoli, 63, was quick to find work.
The former coach of Olympique de Marseille (2021-22) and ex-coach of Chile (2012-16) and Argentina (2017-18) will have under his authority at Flamengo, one of the most prestigious clubs from South America, stars like the Brazilian Everton Ribeiro, the Uruguayan Giorgian de Arrascaeta or the Chilean Arturo Vidal.
The fiery Argentinian coach has already had several experiences in Brazilian football, when he led the Santos FC teams from December 2018 to December 2019, then Atletico Mineiro from March 2020 to February 2021, before coming to the Olympics from Marseille. Flamengo, winner of the Copa Sudamericana in February, was beaten last Sunday in the final of the Rio Championship by Fluminense. He will face Coritiba on Sunday as part of the first day of the Brazilian Championship, which begins this weekend.
