The FIFA Women’s World Cup, currently taking place in Australia and New Zealand, has already reached record attendances, surpassing the 2015 edition in Canada, Fifa announced on Sunday. Before the round of 16 between the United States and Sweden in Melbourne, 1,339,331 people had already passed through the turnstiles to get to the stadiums, said the federation which governs international football.
With 27,706 additional spectators in Melbourne this Sunday, the total number of spectators exceeds the old record of 1,353,506, established in 2015 in Canada. At that time there were fewer teams and therefore fewer matches: 52 instead of 64 this year.
The average attendance for the World Cup is just over 26,000 spectators per match, FIFA said. Even before the start of the knockout phase, the 2023 World Cup had attracted more people than the 2019 edition organized in France.
