Martin Sigren, the 3rd row and captain of Chile, confided his feelings after the defeat against Samoa (43-10): “We came with intentions but we made too many unprovoked errors which cost us this match . Individual errors that have an impact on the collective. Against such a physical team, we ended up paying the bill on a physical level. We have marked faces because we faced a high-level team. We had dreamed of winning this match. It hurt when you had that feeling. We must learn quickly from this defeat and recover from it. We still have two matches to play, two big challenges. We can’t let ourselves get discouraged.”
Chilean coach Pablo Lemoine also shared his analysis of the match: “At a lower level, we can afford to have absences but not at this level. In the first half, we managed to create dynamic situations and be offensive. We respected the game plan, but we conceded a lot of unnecessary penalties. In the 39th minute we are already at 17 penalties I think. We missed it. The strategy I chose in the second half didn’t work, there too, we’ll have to look at that again.”
