Briton Adam Yates won the queen stage of the Tour de Romandie on Saturday, after 161.6 km between Sion and Thyon 2000 and a splendid battle in the high mountains with Thibaut Pinot, finally second.
The winner of the 2021 Tour of Catalonia, 30, simultaneously steals the yellow leader’s jersey from his UAE teammate, the young Spaniard Juan Ayuso, who won the time trial on Friday.
Yates launched his attack 4km from the finish, on the long final climb of almost 21km hemmed in by walls of snow, the first taste of alpine passes and high altitude efforts for the peloton this season.
For the last season of his career, Thibaut Pinot, 32, went on the hunt 2 km from the line but finally failed 7 seconds behind the Briton, after already two second places this year during the Tour du Jura then the Tour du Doubs.
