American singer Cher has filed a request for guardianship of her youngest son, Elijah Blue Allman, 47. She believes he is unable to “manage his financial resources” due to his drug addiction and mental health issues.
The artist fears that the funds received by Elijah following the death of his father “would be immediately spent on drugs, leaving Elijah without resources to support himself and putting his life in danger”, we can read in the court documents filed in Los Angeles Superior Court. In these documents, the singer’s lawyers state that a guardian is therefore “urgently necessary” to protect the property and the physical and mental health of her son. The text also states that Cher, 77, has “worked tirelessly to ensure Elijah receives treatment and the help he needs.”
This request would also aim to remove control of Elijah Allman’s finances from his wife, Marieangela King, from whom he filed for divorce in 2021. Both are still legally married. In October, Marieangela King said the couple had agreed to suspend divorce proceedings and work on their marriage, but she had reportedly not seen her husband in person for six months. The motion filed by Cher states that the couple’s “tumultuous relationship was marked by a cycle of substance abuse and mental health crises”; she believes King “does not support Elijah’s recovery.”Elijah Blue Allman has not publicly commented on his mother’s proceedings but he recently posted a “prisoner under guardianship” message, accompanied by a photo of a vampire , on Instagram. Contacted through his lawyer, he told the Associated Press: “I am doing well, … I am healthy in body and mind.” He declined to say whether he intended to oppose Cher’s request and declined to comment.
A hearing for a temporary order is currently scheduled for January 5, and the hearing for a permanent order is scheduled for March 6.
A conservatorship is a form of guardianship granted by a court to people who are incapable of making their own decisions, such as those with dementia or other mental illnesses. It can be used to manage a person’s financial or personal affairs, or both. The topic was widely reported in the media when what began as a temporary conservatorship of Britney Spears turned into a legal dispute of several years between the singer and her father.
