German striker Thomas Müller, 2014 world champion and double winner of the Champions League (2013, 2020), has extended his contract for one season with Bayern until the summer of 2025, the Bavarian club announced on Tuesday in a press release.

The contract of Thomas Müller (34 years old) with Bayern Munich expired on June 30, 2024, and was extended by one year, while the final of the 2025 Champions League is scheduled at the Allianz Arena in Munich in a year and a half. The striker has been used less recently. This season, he has only started five times in the Bundesliga, never in the Champions League, scoring two goals and making five assists.

“I am happy that my journey with Bayern continues. I want to make my contribution, to continue to be successful as a team and as a club,” underlined Thomas Müller, quoted in the Bayern Munich press release. “He is a leader on and off the field, but also an example and is incredibly valuable to the entire team,” explained sporting director Christoph Freund.

The career of Thomas Müller is closely linked to Bayern, for this pure Bavarian, born in Weilheim in Oberbayern, about fifty kilometers south of the center of Munich.

After starting football at Pähl, he joined Bayern’s youth teams in the summer of 2000 at just 10 years old, and signed his first professional contract there nine years later.

Under Louis van Gaal, he quickly earned his starting place during the 2009/10 season, scoring twice in his first Champions League match, with the Dutch technician’s phrase remaining famous in Munich: “Müller is still playing” .

With 237 goals scored, he is the third highest scorer in Bayern’s history, behind Gerd Müller (568) and Robert Lewandowski (344). On Sunday against Stuttgart, he played his 684th match for Bayern, closing in on goalkeeper Sepp Maier’s 706 appearances, which holds the record.

He won his two Champions Leagues in June 2013 at Wembley (2-1 against Borussia Dortmund) and in August 2020 in Lisbon (1-0 against Paris SG). He played in two other lost C1 finals, in 2010 against Inter Milan and in 2012 against Chelsea at the Allianz Arena.
