The nominations continue to rain in for Anatomy of a Fall by Justine Triet. After the American Golden Globes this Monday, the Palme d’Or is in full swing at their French equivalents. This X-ray of a contemporary marriage at the end of its tether through the destiny of a successful novelist accused of having pushed her husband into the void, is in the running in six categories of the Lumières prizes, awarded on January 22 by journalists and international critics based in Paris.

With six nominations, Anatomy of a Fall by Justine Triet is ahead of the other trial film of 2023 The Goldman Trial by Cédric Kahn, in which Justine Triet’s co-writer and companion, Arthur Harari, plays, is in the running for the trophy revelation. Five nominations also reward The Animal Kingdom by Thomas Cailley, the fantastic fable and winner of the Goncourt du cinéma, the Louis Delluc prize, another great critical and public success with more than a million cinema admissions. These three feature films, presented at Cannes, will be in the running for the Lumière for best film with Last Summer by Catherine Breillat (four nominations) and Goutte d’or by Clément Cogitore (three nominations). Four nominations also for Disco Boy by Giacomo Abbruzzese and three for Le Rapissement by Iris Kaltenbäck.

Anatomy of a Fall can win statuettes in the most coveted categories: film, direction, screenplay, actress (Sandra Hüller), male revelation for Milo Machado Graner and image. Sandra Hüller, who is the favorite, will face last year’s winner Virginie Efira (Nothing to Lose), Catherine Deneuve, French first lady in Bernadette, Lea Drucker (L’été été), Hafsia Herzi (Le Rapissement) .

This grand slam of nominations for Justine Triet and her collaborators sounds like a new snub for the CNC, which preferred to support the Oscar candidacy for best international film of The Passion of Dodin Bouffant. Tran Anh Hung’s culinary fable was not to the taste of the members of the Lumières, who only retained it in one fairly minor category: the prize for best image. Neither Benoît Magimel nor Juliette Binoche slip into the interpretation sections.

The story on the influence Love and the forests and the historical melodrama The time to love are also present at the margins. The popular blockbuster of the year D’Artagnan, the first part of The Three Musketeers by Martin Bourboulon, was completely snubbed.

The Lumières awards are one of the barometers of the French awards season and are a good indication of the films that will be acclaimed by the Césars, during their nominations in January. Without waiting, Anatomy of a Fall took a head start internationally, raiding the European Oscars of the European Film Awards. The Palme d’Or also collects trophies from American critical organizations. Which suggests the film has the potential to garner nominations in the general Oscar categories (actress, screenplay).
