pandemic Covid-19 has pushed the tourism sector but not the intentions of the departure of the French, who see in the summer a possibility to return to after eight weeks of confinement. This is the conclusion of a survey carried out by the firm BVA, from 2 to 4 June 2020, on a sample of 1 055 people representative of the French population. “It was important to wait for the lifting of the travel ban to more than 100 km to conduct this study. Before, we had no visibility, we didn’t know if we could travel, or how”, contextualizes Jean-Pierre Mas, president of the Business Travel, the organization that brings together the French agencies, which commissioned the study.
“Overall, the results provide no great surprise, even if we do not expect to have a rate as high for future holiday makers. 58% of respondents are planning to go this summer, three percentage points more than in 2018, the date of our last survey as the subject.”

according To the survey, the French had a project start-up are mostly of the ile-de-france (67%), of people aged 18 to 24 years (74%) and families (66%). Among them, 81% are optimistic about the fact that their stay will run smoothly, despite the current situation. This is probably the result of the efforts put in place by the actors of the tourism industry to allay the anxieties of the visitors and comply with the recommendations of the government : strict protocols, disinfection systematic and regular rooms, distribution of hydroalcoholic gel, mask-wearing during the client installation, compliance with social distancing in public areas…

The international context uncertain however leads the French to refocus on the Hexagon. Only 8% of them are planning to move abroad. A score very low, which is explained naturally by the continued closure of the borders for certain destinations, as well as the many restrictions on volume If this is a major change for some countries of the world, “the national tourism in France weighs already 80% in many jurisdictions, with the exception of the Ile-de-France and of the Côte d’azur”, says Didier Arino, director, associate general Protourisme, the firm specialized in the studies and the council.

If the state of mind of the future leisure is positive, nonetheless, there is some uncertainty in the procedures of reservation. A few weeks of summer leave, only 27% of French people have booked their stay in full and 17% in part (routes, rentals…), compared to nearly 70% in the same period last year. Despite a boom observed for bridges of may, “we are still far from the month of June, normal,” emphasizes Susan Escure, director-general of the federation of Gîtes de France, which suggests an average occupancy rate this month of the order of 30 to 40% of the 70,000 schools certified . “Even if the bookings are likely to accelerate in July, this will not offset the activity void of these last few months and the absence of foreign tourists,” adds she.

Among those who have not yet booked their holiday (56%), retirees who expect to leave for France are the most numerous (68%). “They were probably afraid of being taken hostage with paid vacation that cannot be carried out. Or medical situations that are deteriorating. It is for this reason that we have made great efforts on the conditions of cancellation and reimbursement of the stays,” says Jean-Pierre Mas.
In the case of targeted measures of reconfinement or the appearance of foci of contamination in certain regions, involving new restrictions on travelers, vacationers will be offered an immediate refund of their stay or to have him also be fully refunded if it is not used in 18 months. “Despite everything, the context omen reservations even more late than they already are, with a report on a part of the family accommodation”, adds the chairman of the Business Travel.

In spite of a health situation which is still uncertain, almost 4 out of 10 French intend all the same to spend their vacation in a place collective (camping, hotel, holiday club…). A rate comparable to that of the people with you can stay with relatives or in their secondary residence. “The hosting family and the collective is often acclaimed as the most accessible. Not to mention the parents who have spent two months of confinement in the city with children, for which the formula club with child care and meal management can be a good option “, concedes he.
Surprisingly, the rental accommodation between individuals, yet adapted to the directions of detachment, is pushed to the second plan: 20% envisioned for this summer, including a majority of couples with child(ren). “Families are turning more to self-catering accommodation with a garden, and if possible with a swimming pool,” says Timothy Roux, president of the national Union for the promotion of the vacation rental and general manager of the platform of rentals between private individuals Abritel.

About the cravings also, 24% of the French would opt for the campaign. Pledges of large open spaces and a sweetness of life, between nostalgia and good local produce, the small municipalities have the odds. “Before the Covid-19, I had to convince my clients that by making the choice of the rural life they do not regret not. Today, these are the customers who ask us to move away the most possible of places too touristic. They are not haunted by the least doubt, determined in their choices and this is really new,” says Eloise raillard brothers, which was founded in the autumn of last year the travel agencys Our expensive campaigns.
On about 35,000 communes in our country, a good half have fewer than 500 inhabitants. As it has long existed in the mode of vacation at the farm, some are convinced that rurality is the new trend. “In reality, the campaign has grown from just two points compared to the intentions of starting last year. It is a movement that is very bobo, everybody expresses his / her desires of nature, especially these last few weeks. But at the time of the arbitration, the facility offered by the beach which always takes precedence,” said Jean-Pierre Mas.

Without surprise, the sea remains the most popular destination of the travellers (54%). Each year, 35 million holiday makers converge on the French coast and clumping on 4 % of the metropolitan territory. “The beach is as densely populated as the city. Yet, it is sharing the space in a good agreement because it satisfied a dream of purity and transparency, is close to an eden that no one wants to tarnish”, decrypts the anthropologist Jean-Didier Urbain, author of On the beach, manners and customs of seaside (Editions Payot). Pandemic or not, nobody seems to be able to do the shadow on the singular place occupied by this small piece of territory in our habits summer since the year 1936.
