Mewen Tomac became European champion in the 50m backstroke in short course on Wednesday in Otopeni (Romania). The 22-year-old Frenchman, quadruple French champion at the end of October, won the first medal of his career in an international championship.

In the final, he beat his personal best by swimming in 22 sec 84, ahead of the German Ole Braunschweig (23 sec 00). The Italian Lorenzo Mora and the Swiss Thierry Bollin, tied for third in 23 sec 10, completed the podium.
