After a stint at Chelsea between 2021 and 2022, Thomas Tuchel is enjoying the good days of Bayern Munich with whom he qualified for the round of 16 of the Champions League. The German coach was the guest of a round table in the Bavarian city during which he looked back on his time in the capital between 2018 and 2020.

Tuchel notably spoke about the management of strong personalities in a club and compared the current Bayern Munich locker room to that of Paris SG at the time. “I had a very German mindset where you expect a lot from certain rules. A certain behavior that should always be present. But there are different ways to build a team. In Paris, for example, the rules are completely different from those here in Germany. This helps me to better understand my players,” he confided in Bild before emphasizing the challenges encountered in terms of management within the Parisian squad.

“When I hear here at Bayern that a certain behavior from a certain player is unacceptable, it makes me laugh because I say to myself: you don’t know what we had to face in Paris! It makes me calmer,” added the Champions League-winning technician a year after his ouster from Paris SG.

Tuchel also focused on the way in which he had managed stars like Kylian Mbappé during his two seasons in France. “They are very demanding and full of talent. They have a big ego that drives them forward. You need a good connection, otherwise you will not be able to convince them of your ideas,” detailed the former defender before citing other great players, more reserved within a collective: “There are the big names, but there are also discreet superstars like Gündogan, Mkhitaryan in Dortmund, Marquinhos and Thiago Silva in Paris. Or even Kanté, Mount, Kovacic, Havertz at Chelsea. I also learned a lot from these players as a coach. They are very important as role models in the way they lead the team.”
