The European Commission recommends the accession of Albania and Northern Macedonia and rewarded so that the most recent reforms in the Balkan States. But the road to the EU for the two countries is still far.

The European Commission has called for the Start of EU accession negotiations with the Balkan countries of Albania and Northern Macedonia. The reasons for this significant reform steps in both countries. “The past year was in the Region as a whole was a year of positive change,” said EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini.

Albania, and particularly North of Macedonia, which has a protracted name dispute with neighbours Greece, had done their part of the work, she said. Now it was the EU, the other part of the bargain.

Further reform is necessary

The EU member States had agreed to the opening of accession talks with Albania and Northern Macedonia in the previous year, in principle. The actual beginning of the talks has, however, made further Reform is dependent on progress. These requirements see the EU-Commission is now satisfied.

For the start of negotiations to agree the EU countries are now again permanently. This could actually happen at a Meeting of European Ministers in mid-June. Previously, you must still agree to the Bundestag in Germany.

Union jerks to a halt

The Union parties, however, brace themselves, however. “It will be October until it comes to a decision,” said the Chairman of the European Affairs Committee, Gunther Krichbaum (CDU). The CSU MEP Markus Ferber warned of hasty negotiations. “At the present time, neither the EU nor one of the Balkan countries, only in the approach to EU accession.”

The Minister of state for Europe at the Federal foreign office, Michael Roth (SPD), penetrates to a rapid opening of EU accession talks. “We are in the word and should adhere to our Commitments,” writes Roth in an article for the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung”.
