Victor Wembanyama’s San Antonio Spurs suffered a 10th consecutive defeat by losing at home to the Los Angeles Clippers (109-102) on Wednesday in the NBA, with coach Gregg Popovich showing himself annoyed by the lack of fair play from his supporters during the game.
Already corrected by the Clippers on Monday at home (124-99), the Spurs lost again on Wednesday, and continue to worsen their record (3 wins – 12 losses) which earns them last place in the Western Conference.
More prominent than Monday, French prodigy Victor Wembanyama compiled 22 points, 15 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 blocks, notably highlighting a few dunks.
“It was a more solid match from us, we are on the right path, we have potential. Apart from the frustration of losing, the rest is positive. We did a good job against a title candidate,” said “Wemby”.
The game, with uneven intensity, was marked by an extremely rare match event: the intervention during the second quarter of the historic coach of the San Antonio Spurs Gregg Popovich at the stadium microphone to ask his own supporters to stop whistling the Clippers.
Spurs fans are particularly hostile towards their former player Kawhi Leonard, NBA champion with San Antonio in 2014, who requested and obtained his departure from Texas in 2018.
“Can we stop whistling and let these guys play? It’s not classy, it’s not who we are,” asked Popovich, annoyed, before a free throw from Leonard. Without much effect, since the crowd whistled more loudly for the rest of the match.
“Anyone who knows a little about sport knows that you should not titillate your opponent,” at the risk of motivating him, Popovich soberly commented at a press conference.
“It’s like that, it’s one of the best crowds in the league, they want to win, I can hear it on the field,” said Leonard, the match’s top scorer with 26 points. “But, in the street or in the restaurant, they always show me that they appreciate me.”
San Antonio travels to San Francisco to face the Golden State Warriors on Friday.
