World No.2 Jannik Sinner, right hip “increasingly painful”, withdrew on Wednesday on the eve of his quarter-final scheduled against Canadian Félix-Auger Aliassime (35th) at the Masters 1000 in Madrid, less than one month of Roland-Garros (May 26-June 9).

“Jannik Sinner has withdrawn due to a right hip injury,” writes the Spanish tournament. With the elimination of Carlos Alcaraz, world No.3 and double title holder, in the quarter-finals by world No.8 Andrey Rublev a little earlier, the Madrid Masters 1000 has just lost its first two leaders in quick succession. series.

“My hip has been bothering me this week and has become more and more painful,” the Italian explained on social media. “After medical advice, we decided that it was better not to play so as not to make things worse. I will undergo additional examinations in the coming days and I will follow the doctors’ advice to recover,” he said.

A man in good form during the first part of the season, Sinner presented, before withdrawing, a record of 28 victories for only two defeats since the start of 2024. If his hip allows him, he is expected next week in Rome, at home, for the last Masters 1000 on ocher before Roland-Garros.

At 22, the Italian won his first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in January. He has added two trophies since then, in Rotterdam and at the Masters 1000 in Miami. He launched his clay court season with a semi-final in Monte-Carlo in mid-April (lost to Tsitsipas).

Auger-Aliassime is thus qualified for his first Masters 1000 semi-final since November 2022 (Paris). For a place in the final, the 23-year-old Canadian will face either world No.4 Daniil Medvedev or Czech Jiri Lehecka (31st), Nadal’s knockout.
