Zonnebeke Zonnebeke has a tourist asset. The tower of the onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk is now accessible. Visitors, after climbing the 212 steps to a height of forty metres will be rewarded with a panoramic view on the region. “To Ieper and Heuvelland and in clear weather even to Veurne and Diksmuide”, says alderman for Tourism, Sabine Vanderhaeghe (#Team8980). The church tower is free to visit.
Friday afternoon was the official opening. On Saturday 6 and 13 april from 9 to 16 hours is the church placed in the spotlight with a public openingsmoment. The province and the autonomous provinciebedrijf Westtoer, invested 150,000 euros in the project. The municipality of Zonnebeke paid the same amount.
Horizon 2025 invests the province in landscape experience in the tourist regions. “Experience for walkers, hikers and cyclists always but more important,” said deputy Sabien Lahaye-Battheu (Open Vld). “At the very top to get to the visitors a breathtaking vantage point.”
