Klaus Toppmöller had enough. After the manipulation scandal in German football 15 years ago, was for him “a world collapsed,” recalls the longtime national League Trainer. “And that’s why I wanted to do with football in Germany of the time, nothing more.” He had offers from Germany, “from Cologne, for example. But instead, I went in 2006 as a national coach to Georgia.“

As Toppmöller on the evening of the 10. February with friends in front of the TV sat and the Cup draw in the ARD pursued, crept over him, a premonition. “Paderborn has been moved, I said spontaneously: Now Hamburg,” he says. It happened like this: On Tuesday (18.30 clock/Sky) will meet the two second division side in the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup. Just the mention of this match brings Toppmöller bad memories. Because it’s the Cup was in August of 2004, the game was at the centre of the betting scandal. “Now it is rising again,” said Toppmöller: “But this time without Robert Hoyzer. And that is a good thing.“

Toppmöller had a premonition

The 25-year-old Hoyzer had in 2004, with two questionable penalties and a sending-off worthy against the Hamburger Emile’ll be Mpenza, the 4:2 of the third-division club Paderborn. However, even before these key scenes, he had a premonition, as Toppmöller said. “I said after a few minutes, This is controlled”, assured the former HSV coach: “this is something you can feel. I thought the never before and never again afterwards in a game. But at the time each action was whistled aware of against us. That was incredible.“

the HSV-Team doubted. “There was Gossip in the break,” said the former Central defender Bastian Reinhardt years later, in an Interview with “Spiegel TV”. “Something’s going on, there’s something off here,” said Reinhardt. “But you don’t want to have just not true.”

Toppmöller said his suspicions immediately after the game, “and I got full on the mouth. Also in the DFB nobody wanted to hear that it was manipulated. I was literally threatened to restrain myself.“ Toppmöllers suspicions were confirmed. “And I still think very often of it,” he says: “such A disappointment never goes out of the head. Especially because I had not kept in German football.“

Hoyzer up with him today, told Toppmöller. He put no value on it. “With someone who has cheated on me once, I have nothing more to do,” he says. Especially since this defeat ushered in Toppmöllers the end as a Bundesliga coach. Seven weeks later, he was discharged in Hamburg. Bernd Hoffmann, then and now back in the club head of the HSV, said later: “It is not excluded that Klaus Toppmöller in a different output would still be the coach.” The Coach was still a good two years in Georgia. After that, he never worked again as a coach.
