“We are here in different ways”
“Fredrik Svensk on Phoebe Boswells ”Here”, at Göteborgs konsthall”
“Phoebe Boswell grew up in Africa and the Middle east, and now lives in London. Her art revolves around the uprooted humanity, and proceeds from the personal experiences of the places where she currently resides. When she had vision problems, she makes art out of the meeting with the hospital, and when she is in Gothenburg, she deals with his meeting with the city. What we have to do with the solo exhibition Here is a kind of autofiktiv anthropology.”
“nOfta is Boswells autofiktiva method to put her own identity on the game, as in Stranger in the village from 2015.”
“With the title taken from James Baldwins classic essay about his time in the swiss countryside has Boswell made use dejtingappen Tinder. As well as large parts of the exhibition also consists mainly of figurative drawing.”
“n”Stranger in the village” makes visible a racially structured eroticism, at the same time as it does not give place to any authentic human world beyond. The possibility seems to be in the ambivalence, the paradox and the conflict, perhaps in the hope of a viewer who takes care of his own lack of subjectivity, rather than anchoring it in a self-styled identity.”
“If Picasso once used a notion of african antimodern art to violate a normative identity and look, so it is something completely different when Boswell not only do James Baldwin, but also the digitized relationsindustri of which she is a part of.”
“Not in any of the Boswells 18 works, there is a exotic exterior to idealize and liberate yourself through. The relief, such as Jackson Pollock, was found in the improvising jazz-and which he transferred to painting, is not available for Boswell. This in turn means that a smart deconstruction of the närvarometafysik as Pollock struck coins of also not is meaningful. What is left is autofiktiv form, rather than the brutal crimes with the conventions.”
“nOm artists such as Picasso and Pollock through his radical creation, rather than through consumption or competition, tried to resolve the feeling of alienation, so was their art from a man who, like capital and the state lacked subjectivity.”
“What the Boswells art shows is that this idea of humanity, is not only arbitrary, but that we as people are given different opportunities to do something, depending on how we have been identified. We are Here in a different way.”
