1Good news and bad news. Or the opposite if this new adaptation of Snow White doesn’t mean anything to you. Disney has revealed a preview of its next live-action remake of one of its animated classics. We see the iconic princess surrounded, not by the seven dwarves, but by seven “magical creatures.” At the same time, the studio announced that the release of the film, scheduled for March 22, 2024, was postponed to spring 2025. A release that we imagine delayed by the strike of screenwriters and actors in Hollywood.

Disney has made a point of adapting to current tastes the story of this tale by the Brothers Grimm, published in 1812, which inspired the 1937 animated film. Far from the candid and docile princess represented in the first adaptation , this new princess wants to be independent and feminist. “She will not be saved by the Prince and she will be the one to establish his rules” explained Gal Gadot, who will play the evil stepmother, during an interview for Entertainment Weekly. For the heroine, the studios hired Rachel Zegler, noticed in the remake of West Side Story by Steven Spielberg. On social networks, the American actress of Polish-Colombian origin initially suffered numerous racist comments. She also made numerous comments on her conception of the character, explaining that it was “no longer 1937”, that Snow White did not need to be saved and that the Prince’s kiss which woke the sleeping young woman amounted to “harassment” in his eyes. Which made more than one person bristle.

As for Grincheux, Sneezy and their friends, they will no longer be dwarves but “magical creatures” to avoid any form of discrimination against people with dwarfism. Disney studios had been the target of scathing criticism from actor Peter Dinklage, who played Tyrion Lannister in the series Game Of Thrones. “You guys are progressive in a way, but you keep telling this fucking backwards story about seven dwarves living together in a cave, what the hell are you guys doing? Have I done nothing to advance the cause?” he exclaimed during a podcast in January 2022.

The first photo from the film released on Friday, however, confirms that, even if they are no longer called “dwarves”, the seven little characters will indeed be part of the film.
