Sweden has a high vaccinationsgrad. Our national vaccination programme is based on volunteerism, in combination with society in different ways encourages the parents of young children to allow children to be vaccinated. Thanks to these, Sweden is in principle free from several previously endemic diseases such as polio, measles and rubella.
to allow themselves To be vaccinated has two effects. The direct and obvious effect is that a person who vaccinate themselves to protect themselves from, or at least greatly reduce risks of, to be infected by the disease. The indirect effect, that are not as obvious, is that an individual who allows himself to be vaccinated also protects others from the disease, namely that hen was infected if he or she had not been vaccinated and instead infected.
In fact, it appears that not all need to be vaccinated in a population to an endemic disease to disappear completely from the population. For measles, for example, should be at least 95 per cent of those born each year are vaccinated for Sweden to avoid greater mässlingsutbrott (with number of deaths as Sweden, and other countries, had until the 1960s).
is a strong reason for that vaccination not only is each individual’s choice (in this case, parents). By vaccination protects the man himself, but also the other, and vice versa – that do not allow themselves to be vaccinated are at risk to himself be infected, but also to infect others.
This fact makes the society encourages vaccination. It can’t be any major outbreak of measles despite the fact that as many as 5 percent are unvaccinated assumes that the unvaccinated do not clump together.
If that were the case would we still be able to see large outbreaks of measles. All of this is well known in the infektionsepidemiologin based analysis of mathematical/statistical models.
in Sweden and abroad about the unvaccinated children to go to kindergartens. In Stockholm discussed the possibility of banning children who are not vaccinated to go to school.
the Morals and ethics of this leave I to the other, but from the smittspridningssynpunkt is the consequence of such action is unclear. It depends on what the kids do instead of going in the nursery.
If this ”hot” leads to that the children are vaccinated, the effect is positive, that is to say, these children have reduced risk for both to be infected and to infect others. If the children do not vaccinate and instead staying at home with a parent becomes reasonably the consequence that the risk to be infected, and the risk of bringing the infection on, also off compared to if they had to walk on the kindergarten – thus a positive effect from the smittspridningssynpunkt.
do not vaccinate and instead of going to school starts to meet other children who have been expelled for the same reason, the effect becomes the reverse. It increases children’s risk of being infected and the risk of bringing the infection on to others – thus, negative out of the smittspridningssynpunkt.
A further step in this direction, as discussed in other european countries such as the Netherlands, would be to allow nurseries to decide. It would mean that some preschools reject the child not to be vaccinated, while others allow them.
This would lead to the unvaccinated children to be concentrated in certain kindergartens. Especially if it is about few such kindergartens, who would thus receive relatively high concentration of unvaccinated children, this would be unfortunate from smittspridningshänseende. It would lead to more children being infected by measles, with tragic consequences both for those affected and to society in general.
if they accept unvaccinated children or not is thus the wrong way to go. The proposal to not allow unvaccinated children to go to kindergarten, are more uncertain what effect it leads to.
Before such a measure is implemented should be taken to ensure that it would not lead to these children, to a large extent would remain unvaccinated and furthermore begin to spend more time with each other. It would lead to more mässlingsutbrott and thus have the opposite effect to that intended.
