Atlético Madrid signed a sixth consecutive victory in the league on Sunday against promoted Alavés at the Metropolitano (2-1) during the 11th day of La Liga, overtaking FC Barcelona, beaten at home by Real Madrid on Saturday, to settle in third place.
Dominant from the start, the Colchoneros opened the scoring with Riquelme (26th, 1-0) before Morata doubled the lead at the end of the first period (45th 1, 2-0). The promoted Basque reduced the score a few seconds from time with a strike from Guevara (90th 6, 2-1).
Despite a late match, they took advantage of Barça’s defeat in Catalonia against their Madrid rival during the Clasico on Saturday (2-1) to get on the podium, three lengths behind Girona and Real Madrid, still leader.
