on Thursday, a new report from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) conclude that overfladetemperaturerne in the oceans of the world hit a record high in 2018.
at the same time shows the inventory data, that the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere have never been higher, writes the news agency AP.
the UN secretary-general, António Guterres, calls the WMO report “yet another wake-up call” for the world’s governments and the global industry.
– The (report, red.) proves what we have long said, namely that climate change is happening faster than our efforts to stop them, he says.
WMO stresses in the report that the average temperature globally is now a full degree warmer than when the industrial revolution began about the year 1760.
Even though the increase may sound insignificant, it has serious consequences for global weather patterns, says the WMO’s secretary-general, Petteri Taalas.
– We have seen far more weather-related disasters due to climate change, and increasing temperatures have long term consequences for millions of people, he says to news agency AFP.
According to the united nations, 4.5 billion people have been directly affected by extreme weather since 1998.
the WMO estimates that the extreme weather has hit the 62 million people alone in 2018. The changing weather conditions led at the same time, two million people have had to leave their home.
the Organization points to as an example of the cyclone Idai, which has hit several african countries and killed more than 500. Similar phenomena can be expected, says the WMO.
In the report shows, moreover, that the last four years have been the warmest since records began to collect global temperatures.
António Guterres calls on the basis of the report that the world’s leaders gather in september to negotiate a new plan that can reduce the global emissions of CO2.
I says to world leaders: don’t come with toasting, came with a plan, he says, according to news agency Reuters.
