The Everton club risks the withdrawal of 12 points in the standings following an investigation into violations of the financial rules of the Premier League, according to the English press.

The organizing body of the English Championship referred the club from the North of England to a committee in March, accusing it of being at fault with regard to the rules of profitability and sustainability of clubs during a period ending at the end of the 2021-22 season.

Losses of up to 105 million pounds (around 120 million EUR) are tolerated for the most powerful clubs over a period of three years. Beyond that, they risk sanctions.

According to the Daily Telegraph, Premier League leaders have asked an independent commission to impose the toughest sanction on the Toffees, which would constitute the largest withdrawal of points in the history of the competition.

With 12 points less, Everton would be -5 points and found themselves six points behind last place occupied by Sheffield United. Everton currently has seven points and remains on a 2-0 loss in the derby against Liverpool on Saturday.

“The club strongly contests the accusation of non-compliance and, with its team of independent experts, is completely confident that it will comply with the financial rules,” the club reacted at the time of these allegations.

“Everton is prepared to defend itself forcefully before the committee,” added the Toffees leaders in a press release. The English club has recorded annual losses for five consecutive seasons, amounting to 430 million pounds (around 500 million EUR) over the period.
