Tottenham, without forcing, regained its leadership position in the Premier League by beating a harmless Fulham team at home 2-0 at the end of a one-sided London derby, Monday at the end of the 9th day.
Spurs, who are making the best start to a season in their history since 1960, extend their unbeaten run this season to seven wins and two draws and, with 23 points, are now two points ahead of Manchester City and Arsenal.
This team, transformed by the Australian Ange Postecoglou, who arrived this summer, offered a polished game with quick one-touch combinations in small spaces which disconcerted the Cottagers, reduced to simple foils. Captain Heung-min Son set the tone from the start but his point-blank shot was stopped by Bernd Leno (2nd).
Then Richarlison missed the target by placing a nice shot close to the post at the end of a rush initiated by Kulusevski (30th).
While the match was humming a little, the talent of the South Korean captain of Spurs broke the deadlock, perfectly exploiting a risky recovery from the Cottagers’ defense. Found on the edge of offside, he fired a sumptuous shot into the top corner of helpless goalkeeper Bernd Leno (35th). His 7th goal of the season, two points behind Haaland.
At the restart, the debates seemed to be balanced with finally a slightly more enterprising Fulham team, but a new suspicious recovery came to ruin this improvement by offering the break goal to Postecoglou’s men. Maddison punished this umpteenth error and propelled his team to convincing success.
Fulham fell one place, to 13th place, with 11 points.
