Tite, the former coach of the Brazil team, will coach Flamengo almost a year after leaving the Seleçao, a manager of the Rio de Janeiro club announced on Monday.

“We had frank, direct discussions and they ended in an excellent way,” Marcos Braz, vice-president of the Carioca club, told the specialist site Globoesporte, specifying that the official presentation of the new coach would take place on Tuesday.

This appointment ends two weeks of suspense after the dismissal of Argentinian Jorge Sampaoli, former coach of Olympique de Marseille. Adenor Leonardo Bachi, better known by the nickname Tite, will return to service at the age of 62 almost a year after leaving the Seleçao following the elimination in the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar in December.

He led the Seleçao from June 2016 to the end of 2022, during 81 matches, for a record of 60 victories, 15 draws and only six defeats. Under his leadership, the Brazil team won the Copa América in 2019, but were eliminated in the quarter-finals of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, respectively by Belgium and Croatia. Flamengo sacked Jorge Sampaoli at the end of September, just five months after his arrival.

The former OM coach (2021-2022) had paid the price for the elimination in the round of 16 of the Copa Libertadores, then the defeat in the final of the Brazilian Cup, two competitions including the Rio club, currently fifth in the Brazilian championship, 11 points behind leader Botafogo, held the titles.
