The chapel of reconciliation on the former death strip at Bernauer Straße was closed at the time of the Berlin wall in 1961, in 1985 the East German government ordered the demolition of the Church. After the reunification of the old stones of the Church were incorporated into the clay of the chapel, many of the furnishings remained in the vaults of municipalities across Berlin. So also the clock tower. Now the municipality wants to allow the watch to restore. 30 000 euros are necessary. The money get together, it was called the fundraiser “take a Minute”. For 45 Euro donors get a Minute, and with the help of a piece of Berlin history back.

To 125. Anniversary of the Foundation of the reconciliation parish on the 28th. August to go on the clock in the Foyer of the building of the Protestant work for diakonia and development on Berlin’s North station in operation again, after 58 years of standstill.

How was the fundraiser?

After the reunification, the chapel was built as a sign of reconciliation. The rescued bells of the former Church and the Altar returned to their original location. The same thing we wanted for the watch. But we had too great a fear of vandalism. Fortunately, the diakonia offered, the at from behind a plexiglass window in your Foyer with “bread for the world” exhibit. Add to that, that to us only the movement, the dial had been destroyed with the tower. Now the Berlin Church of Zion has new dials to make us a gift.

Thomas Jeutner, 58, is pastor of the Protestant reconciliation parish Berlin.

What is the clock for you personally?

the memory is still alive witnesses of time. The watch is a witness. She remained with the building of the wall. The fact that you will soon be ticking again, shows that you can’t pause life. Berlin was revived with the fall of the wall. Today, the city is a thriving metropolis, and the watch is the sign of life. As a former GDR citizen, I connect my own experience with the Region to the North railway station. As an apprentice for the iron workers I spent time at the bricked-up station my first day of work. After 30 years, has led me to my career path again back here. This touched me very much.

How much money have you received so far?

The half we have. A total of 720 minutes can purchase the dispenser. We hope to get to August, the rest of the donations. Any Person, dedicated to us a Minute, will receive a certificate and a donation receipt.
