The convicted drug lord Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman will require a new trial, after that it has emerged that members of the jury violated a prohibition to follow the case in the media.

A member of the jury has told Vice News that at least five members of the panel discussed the media’s coverage of the trial, although it was forbidden. The fear was that the media coverage could influence the jury.

– We got the message that we are not forced to follow the media during the trial? But we did so! The jury did it, ” says the anonymous member of the jury to the Vice.

Guzmans lawyer Jeffrey Lichtman says his high-profile client has requirements on an impartial jury.
