This Tuesday, October 3, Emmanuel Macron will chair a national tribute to the historian Hélène Carrère d’Encausse, who died in early August at the age of 94. Announced Friday by the Élysée, this tribute is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in the main courtyard of the Hôtel national des Invalides.

The ceremony “salutes the journey of a woman who had risen to the top of French letters thanks to the breadth of her work” according to the Élysée.

Hélène Carrère d’Encausse was the first woman to head the French Academy, of which she was a member from 1990 before becoming permanent secretary of the institution from 1999. A great specialist in Russia, she wrote several biographies including those of Lenin, Stalin and Catherine II. She also had a political career and was notably elected to the European Parliament in June 1994.
