Jussie Smollett – an openly gay, black man – has in a complaint to the police stated that two masked men at the end of January fell upon him, tied a noose around his neck and poured bleach over him.
the New York Times reports that Smollett said to the police that his attackers were white, and they shouted: “This is MAGA-country” – a reference to Trump’s campaign slogan, “Make America Great Again” – when they beat him.
Lots of politicians, activists and celebrities showed their support to Smollett and his disgust for the hate crime. The alleged Trump-element has also led many to use the story to highlight which climate it be with the current president’s coarse rhetoric.
After the police not been able to find any övervakningsfilm that shows the incident, rumors began to spread on social media that Smollett found on the event. Two brothers linked to him were arrested on 13 February, but was released two days later and has since cooperated with the police.
