A new hiccup for video refereeing. Especially its use. While it still regularly happens that contentious situations cause controversy, an “obvious” error was made on Saturday afternoon in London. While Liverpool, outnumbered after the exclusion of Curtis Jones, had managed to take the lead thanks to a goal from Luis Diaz, the linesman, supported by VAR, ruled the goal offside. However, the Portuguese striker’s achievement was quite legitimate. A refereeing error which did not fail to provoke a reaction, as it had such an impact on the match.

The committee responsible for arbitration reacted after the meeting. “Luis Diaz’s goal was disallowed by the refereeing team on the pitch. It was an obvious mistake and the goal should have been awarded, but the VAR didn’t work. An investigation will be carried out to understand the circumstances of this malfunction.” A confession which will not change the final result, and which led to an incendiary press release from Liverpool.

After Jurgen Klopp and Virgil Van Dijk both expressed annoyance after the match, it was the club themselves who reacted via a statement: “It is clear that the laws of the game were not applied correctly, which undermined sporting integrity. […] It is also unacceptable that such failures have already been characterized as significant human error. All results should be established only by review and in full transparency. Reactions which unfortunately will not allow Liverpool to change the scenario of the match, lost 2-1.
