“The birds are singing early in the city of light”
“Both the blackbirds and great tits are attracted to sing long before dawn in the light of all of the city lights. Out in the forest, the darkness takes the lie much longer.”
“Certainly well-spring again, or is it luring? Now you hear the birds singing already before six o’clock in the morning in southern and central Sweden – thank all the artificial light in the cities for it. The light gets the birds to chirp far earlier than in their urmiljö in the forests.”
“– the Blackbird is heavily affected by stadsljuset, ” says Didrik Vanhoenacker, on-call biologist at the Swedish museum of Natural history.”
“Blackbirds and country are the most sensitive.”
“He talks about a study from Vienna, 2010, as compared to how the early birds in the city, respectively, in the woods match up. The blackbirds and the country is very the most sensitive to urban artificial light. Early, early, long before dawn, they can be heard in the cities, whilst the relatives in the forest sleeping on for over an hour.”
“Rödhakens arla morgonsång, however, we can wait on, most of them move abroad during the winter and will be back only in march.”
“But the blackbirds can be heard in the morgonmörkret.”
“– the Blackbird starts to sing, about 100 minutes before sunrise in the towns, but out in the woods to start the first 50 minutes before the sun comes up.”
“Then the true blue tit and great tit.”
“– Talgoxen is also affected by the light, but not as much as the blackbird. It starts about 20 minutes earlier in the town. But blåmesen affected almost not at all.”
“Bofinken don’t care”
“Chaffinches are also morgonsångare in the morning, fixed most of the chaffinches have also moved south for the winter. When they come back in march, they will begin to sing soon after blåmesarna. They care not, however if it is artificial light, one half hour before sunrise may be enough both in the city and in the woods, think bofinken.”
“The one that gets the birds to start singing is both the light and the warmth,” explains Didrik Vanhoenacker. Hormones that are triggered by light and heat signals that it is time to find a partner and start building a nest.”
“the Birds are simply in dating and hemnetfasen so here in the winter,” he says, and for stadsfåglarna it’s extra little margin in the morning. They start flirting already in the darkness of the night.”
“– They also start to look for a fine bird to live in the now.”
“The last week it has been warm, so now it is high time to begin, like the birds. The question is how it will be if there will be a and another cold spell. Such is not unusual in February.”
“– It is controlled hormonally, so if it gets cold then they are not. But it is clear that they sing more if it is hot and when the weather is sunny, ” says Didrik Vanhoenacker.”
“The austrian survey on the birds’ sångvanor compare how far before the sunrise of the different species begin their concert in the city, respectively, in the woods.”
“Rödhaken is the earliest morgonfågeln, but most migrate south during the winter. It is also the bird that is affected most by the stadsljuset.”
“About so many minutes before sunrise begins, the birds sing in the forest, respectively, in the city,”
“The austrian study may not be fully applicable to Swedish conditions, but there are enough similarities to draw the conclusion that Swedish birds tally up earlier if they stay in the stadsljus, according to Didrik Vanhoenecker.”
