Indonesian palm oil companies refuse according to the environmental protection organization Greenpeace, compensation payments in the amount of more than $ 1.3 billion. The companies – all the group Merbau Pelalawan Lestari, had been convicted of serious fires in the year 2015 of the civil courts to the payments.
“But not a single company has paid up today, compensation for his role in this disaster.” Greenpeace checked out eleven judicial process against palm oil and paper company in the years 2011 to 2018. Not a single of these procedures have led to a compensation payment.
palm oil is used in countless products, from biscuits about Shampoo and Make-Up to the chocolate cream. Due to the strong increase in demand on the world market the palm oil plantations spread on the Indonesian island of Sumatra, as well as the Indonesian Parts of Borneo and new Guinea in the past years. Whole forests were felled and the habitat of many endangered animal species are destroyed.
Illegal use of fire deforestation, have also been each year, huge forest fires. The smoke also likely to result in a higher mortality rate in the Region. US studies suggest that killed more than 100’000 people to an early death because of the devastating fires in the year 2015. The Indonesian Ministry of the environment did not want to comment on the request by AFP to the Greenpeace report. (anf/sda)
