“I want to stay here,” assured Monday the emblematic coach of the Golden State Warriors Steve Kerr, who begins his 10th season at the head of the San Francisco franchise in October, the last of his current contract.
The coach who will celebrate his 58th birthday on Wednesday, quadruple NBA champion with Stephen Curry’s Warriors (2015, 2017, 2018 and 2022), has not yet signed an extension with owner Joe Lacob or general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr, but feels “good in this position”. “I want to stay here. I know Mike and Joe want me to stay, so I’m very confident, not stressed at all about this situation. I am fully capable of coaching, regardless of whether I only have one year left on my contract or whether I am extended,” he said during a press briefing.
Mike Dunleavy Jr assured that the Warriors could take their time to extend their coach and one of their star players, Klay Thompson, who is also entering his last year of contract. “We do not have a precise timetable, so we will continue to discuss (…) we are very confident,” indicated the leader.
The Warriors, eliminated in the conference semi-finals by the Los Angeles Lakers in the spring, recruited veteran point guard Chris Paul (38) from Phoenix in the offseason, with whom Kerr had “four or five very informative conversations ” this summer. “I’m honored to be able to coach him. He’s one of the greatest players I know. His way of commanding a team, of mastering the game. He knows what to do to win,” praised the coach.
