Ugo Humbert (world 36) allowed France to equalize at 1-1 against Great Britain in the second singles win 7-6, 3-6, 7-5 against Cameron Norrie (world 17) in the group stage of the Davis Cup, Sunday in Manchester.
The 25-year-old left-hander won his duel in two hours and forty-six minutes, keeping alive a French team on the verge of elimination after the first single lost by Arthur Fils (44th in the world), also in three sets, 3 -6, 6-3, 6-4, against the better ranked and more experienced Daniel Evans (27th in the world).
The fate of the match will be decided in the doubles contested immediately in Manchester, in front of more than 13,000 spectators largely supported by the British cause.
The victorious team will qualify for the eight-team final tournament played from the 21st to the 26th in Malaga, Spain. France has been waiting to return to the quarter-finals since 2018.
