The former President of the Republic, François Hollande, and his wife Julie Gayet were present at the start of the 3rd stage of the Sail GP on Saturday, in Saint-Tropez. Under a bright sun, the couple paid a private visit to the French team, fifth at the end of the first of the two days of regattas on Saturday.

“What interests me in sailing is the competition, the fact that there is a team […] which will defy the elements, because we are on the sea, and challenge other teams with a rigor, scientific support provided by data analysis and physical and intellectual effort to make the right decisions and directions,” said François Hollande.

The former President, a “neophyte” on the subject, said he was “amazed” by “high-tech boats” which take part in “competitions that are worthy of Formula 1 circuits”. “It’s important for me to support this France Sail GP team, because already, in principle, I support all the teams in France, added Hollande. But it is also important to publicize new activities. This sailing championship is extraordinary.”

On Saturday, the Blues were only two points behind Australia and Denmark, co-leaders. The Saint-Tropez stage, the only one to take place in France, is the 3rd of the 12 rounds comprising the Sail GP 2023-24.
