Brighton outscored ambitious Newcastle 3-1 at home on Saturday thanks to a hat-trick from young Irish striker Evan Ferguson, helping the ‘Seagulls’ retain fourth place in the league after four rounds.

Roberto de Zerbi’s side, Marseille’s next opponents in the Europa League, have nine points, one behind West Ham and Tottenham, and three behind leaders Manchester City.

At 18, Ferguson was the man of the match by scoring three goals (27th, 65th, 70th) before Callum Wilson (92nd) reduced the score in added time.

The Republic of Ireland striker will face the French team next Thursday at the Parc des Princes in qualifying for Euro-2024.
