Eating disorders among particular Norwegian cross country skiers are in this autumn so widespread and extreme that Sundgot-Borgen experiencing a veritable telefonstorm from coaches and parents looking for help.

– We have had this problem (with eating disorders, ed.) for many years, but it has never been as bad as this autumn, says Sundgot-Borgen at the Norwegian broadcasting corporation NRK, and stating that the young athletes in the firm belief that the fewer kilogram is the right way to sejrspodierne, slims in sick.

– We have zero tolerance (for excessive slankekultur, ed.). We focus on the fact that health always comes before performance, says Andersen to NRK.

According to Jorunn Sundgot-Borgen is the most common forms of eating disorders among cross country skiers, they are extremely restrictive when it comes to dining, which brings the athlete to the limit of the classic anorexia (nervosa) and bulimia, which is binge eating followed by induced vomiting.

Jorunn Sundgot-Borgen calls for landsholdsløbere to step forward and denounce the excessive slankekultur.

– They are role models for the young people, and they can tell you how important it is to eat wise and exercise wise. That it is what it takes to be the best athlete, says the Norwegian professor of sports medicine and a specialist in eating disorders.
