the end of the ‘ 50s was in Bern-Bethlehem is the largest residential building project in Switzerland: the high-rise settlement Tscharnergut, called “Tscharni”. It must have been, as the Modern was shot out of the ground and have assumed a rectangular shape. Director Aron Nick announced the settlement in his documentary “tscharni Blues II” is a “promise”: three rooms, a balcony, a TV and everybody has a car Park.

The Film opened the Solothurn film days, and this fits: 1980 “Dr tscharni Blues”. It was a free reverie in Super-8, shot by Nick’s father Bernard, his uncle Bruno, the godfather Ribi and friends – the Eggi, the Yves and the Stüfi, later the famous actor Stefan Kurt was. They ran made-up over the Meadow, it was brännt the time of the “Züri” and “travel warrior”, and Switzerland was a close country, in which it was in many places the grass does not enter.

the parents of wild?

What happened to the Dream? The son gathers the friends from that time are once again in the Tscharnergut. Uncle Bruno is missing; the artist, then the sharp-sighted social analysis, operation, died in 2014. The Ribi and the Yves to work as a school principal and a French teacher. Christoph Eggimann, the Eggi, you will notice the big heart, but also the loneliness.

In his debut film, the 1984-born Aron Nick poses the question, whether his parents lived generation actually wilder and more idealistic, less driven by perfection, delusion and self-optimization. Part of the answer is that there was at the time, as the men turned their bullshit videos, one of the enemy’s Block: the illiberal society. Another explanation is that the creative eruption was also a breeding ground for the time of the Instagram Filter.

But these are the big lines, and among the friends much in the Small. Because you have dreamed of at the time, never: that one of your sons would you film this, how do you lead in the higher middle-aged men verknorzte discussions over the Failure. Discussions about the social development and Resignation, and the persistence of the Ideal, which somehow still attachments. And on the question of how large the share of own responsibility in the failure, it has to be. Awful adults questions.

“tscharni Blues II” is indirect – and occasionally even unintentionally – a portrait of the young Generation, which no longer seems to reflect at all why she constantly asks after the success that someone has or not. Aron Nick, however, retains above all the inexorable tragicomedy of life, not only takes place in the Tscharnergut. It will be a lot of crying and laughing; to laugh and weep, sometimes a song by Mani Matter enough.

And perhaps it is with the Ideal as with the concrete rail in the settlement, which has always been on the Playground. This was renewed, but the railroad is still there, protected as a historic monument. As a promise to free game. But forever preserved.
