We have been running from a downpour and sought shelter in a museum in the city of Plovdiv in Bulgaria and ended up straight in a guided tour. We try to look between the japanese and see pillows, shirts and bags, all adorned by the colorful and illustrative patterns. The guide tells us that it is about the symbols of the solar, tree and the wheel of life. It turns out that embroidery is a nationalstolthet in Bulgaria, each home with self-respect have at least one or a pair of hand-sewn tablecloths.

the massive interest become resolved when they burst high and uppskattandet ”oh”-sounds over a table and a wall full of korsstygnsbroderier in the shape of a double cross. The subject and handarbetena have been influenced by the buddhist octopus, the wheel, describing how life should be lived, ” says the wizard.

Also folkdräkterna are adorned with ancient symbols inspired by nature worship and other early cultures. Embroidery has since time immemorial been used as a kind of amulets to bring good health and protect the wearer from evil forces. The wizard points to a klänningsärm and explains that certain parts of the body was considered specially vulnerable and must be protected extra.

We take the wizard on the words and in the museum shop, we buy a couple of embroidered crosses, pins fixed on the jackets and hope that they will in all cases help against hällregnet.
