Macedonia has fulfilled in the name dispute with Greece, its part of an agreement. The Parliament voted for the renaming of the country. Athens must now agree with this, then North would be able to join-Macedonia, NATO and the EU.
The social democratic Prime Minister, Zoran Zaev has received the required two-thirds majority just.
The Macedonian Parliament has approved the renaming of the southern Balkan country in the North of Macedonia and thus its part for the settlement of the dispute with Greece fulfilled. For the corresponding amendment of the Constitution 81 of the 120 deputies voted, so that the required two-thirds majority was narrowly achieved. There were neither votes against nor abstentions. The nationalist Opposition boycotted the vote.
The renaming of the country is a key condition for Macedonia to settle the name dispute with Greece. Thus, the way to inclusion in NATO and EU for Macedonia, what has blocked Athens yet.
Federal foreign Minister Heiko Maas has welcomed the vote. He expressed confidence that Athens will agree to it. “The solution of the name dispute between Skopje and Athens is in the homestretch,” said he. He noted that the Greek Parliament the agreement would now agree that the country is North may open up Macedonia to soon join NATO and start of accession talks with the EU.
