From escaping political turmoil in Ethiopia to achieving her dream of competing in the Paris 2024 Olympics, Farida Abaroge, 30, is thrilled to have secured her spot on the refugee Olympic team for Paris 2024. She will be competing in the 1,500m event, marking a happy ending to a challenging journey.

Having left her country in 2016 due to political reasons, Farida’s journey has been filled with hardships. Arriving in France via Sudan, Egypt, and Libya, she reflects on the difficulties faced by her fellow exiles who did not make it. Despite the challenges, Farida is determined to live a normal life and pursue her passion for running.

Upon her arrival in Alsace in December 2017, Farida expressed her interest in running, despite having no prior experience in athletics. She quickly excelled in her training and joined the Strasbourg Sports Association in 2019. With her coach noting her exceptional progress and dedication, Farida’s hard work paid off when she qualified for the refugee Olympic team for Paris 2024.

Thrilled at the opportunity to represent millions of displaced individuals, Farida is focused on achieving her personal best and making her mark at the Olympics. With a determination to leave the past behind and embrace a bright future, Farida is proud to have come this far and is excited to compete at the highest level.


Farida Abaroge was born in Jimma, Ethiopia, and fled her country in 2016 due to political unrest.
